Last week we visited some wine bars in town. This blog is about the first wine bar we visited, El Ajo Blanco. I have never visited before, but which I have known for a while now.
This bar is tucked a way in a corner. If you do not know it is there, you will probably not find it. It is in the Realejo neighbourhood, close to the Santo Domingo church, but off the beaten track. Some tourist and foreigners do find the bar though, following their phone.
The bar and its owner have been here for 20 years already. It used to be a neighbourhood bar, but the neighbourhood has changed over the years and some businesses that were in the same street have disappeared.
The bar is rather small, but cosy and filled with wine bottles. It has five tables inside and a total of 6 bar stools. The bar does not offer soft drinks, but has bottles of beer with and without alcohol.
In winter time he has about 15 or 16 bottles of red wine available per glass. In summer this has gone down to 5 or 6.
The majority of the wine he has is red wine. He only has about 6 different white wines per bottle and only two different ones per glass.
The majority of the wines of El Ajo Blanco is Spanish, but there are a few exceptions. He prefers to buy wines that use the typical grapes of that region.
The first wine I tried was a local wine, called Mas p’aca, a natural wine. It came with a tapa of blue cheese and ham. The second wine I tried was Las Gallinetes. It was a recommendation of the owner. When I said with the first one I will try it, he actually gave me a bit to try it, before filling up the glass. A detail I loved. Maybe because it was quiet this midday. The second tapa was one with fresh homemade guacamole sauce.
He also sells wine to restaurants, but also to clients. You can buy a crate of something and keep it stored in your own locker. 🙂 But you can also buy a single bottle at store price, and not restaurant/bar price.
The bar is closed on Sundays and the other days it is open from about 13 till 16h and from 19.30h till somewhere between midnight and two o’clock.
