Casa Colon

Casa Colon

I visited Casa Colon one afternoon during the week. About two o’clock four tables inside were occupied and none outside. Half an hour later six tables were occupied and there were three couples sitting at the bar. The bar exists since 8 years. The menu is American & Latin American style. The waiters think the name might be derived from Christopher Columbus.

There are nine tables inside and eight bar stools at the bar and four besides the window. In the terrace there are 12 tables alongside the river and six in the side street. All kind of people visit the bar, neighbours as well as foreigners.

You can choose your tapa. There is a menu with 14 different tapas and you can choose a maximum of two varieties per table.
The menu consists of salads, plates to share, meat and fish. The star course is tuna tartar, and Thai style salmon. The plate that is ordered the most is ‘huevos rotos’ (broken eggs).
The star tapas are Chicken curry, mini hamburger and Russian salad.

The chicken curry I had tried during another visit and is very good. Today I started with a vegetable pie and, as always, with a tinto de verano. This one was had a nice taste, not too strong, not too weak. The vegetable pie, with its cheese sauce was really good.

As a second drink I ordered a white wine called Dominio de unx (from the Navarra region with a white garnacha grape) and as a tapa the takebab. A kebab tapa which was nice and had to be eaten by hand, as no fork was provided. I was a dry white wine with crystals.

As a third drink I ordered a rose wine, Glarima from Somontano region with Syrah grapes. Not a very complicated wine, but good for a summer day. As tapa I wanted to try the crepe. Not a tapa I really liked and will suggest to others. The crepe stuck to the plate and had only a very small piece of cheese and ham inside. It was rather tasteless.

There are several wines available per glass on the menu of Casa Colon, three Rioja wines, three Ribera and four from other regions. There are six different white wines available per glass and three rose wines and one Brut (champagne). Per bottle there are six more red and two more white wines available.

The weekends are the busiest moments in the bar, in the afternoon also for meals. Summers are more tranquil then winters.

The kitchen is opened all day long, with opening hours from 12 to midnight and during the weekend from 12 till 1 a.m.
