La Reina Kitchen Bar

La Reina Kitchen Bar

In the beginning of September we also visited La Reina Kitchen Bar. I got to know this bar thanks to Instagram and I also used to work in front of it. This bar is part of a hotel that opened their doors a little under a year ago, on December 14th of 2016, in a former bank. They renovated it thoroughly. The name is derived from the statue in front of their hotel, Isabel the Catholic Queen. And Kitchen Bar, because it is neither a restaurant, nor a bar, but a combination of both.
There are 14 tables inside, and nine barstools at the bar and at the terrace another 11 tables.

The first tapa they gave us with our wine, was chicken croquet. Unfortunately they were tepid. The second tapa was also made with chicken, chimichanga (chicken roll). It wasn’t bad, but we would have loved a bit more filling. What I did not like was the fact that both tapas were with chicken, both with mayonnaise and both lacking seasoning. The other day I went back, and again we had croquet as tapa, but I still have no idea what flavour it was. We did not really like it. After the tapa I have tried in Bocadas in Cuarto Real de Santo Domingo in June, I was left disappointed.

Another point of attention was the strong smell of air freshener. Maybe it was to cover the smell of the gases of the cars on the street and square in front. But with the doors/windows open that smell still came in even now and then.

The midday we were there, La Reina Kitchen Bar had an average occupancy of 2 tables inside and two on the terrace. According to the waiters there weren’t many guests, because it still was holiday period. Although it always is a more tranquil environment during the week. Weekend starts for them on Thursday evening until Saturday night. They always have something during the nights in the weekend, e.g. live music or a DJ.

From half September or beginning of October they are planning to offer a tasting menu, menú de degustación.
Except from the tables you see at first sight, they also have a room ‘upstairs”, or also called the green room. For example to have dinner with a group of friends in a more private environment.
